Heterotopic Bone Formation (HBF) refers to the pathological process where bone and cartilage develop in soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This condition commonly occurs after traumatic injuries, burns, or surgical procedures, particularly around joints like the hip and elbow. HBF can significantly impact rehabilitation outcomes by limiting range of motion and causing pain. The condition is distinct from heterotopic ossification in that it specifically refers to the formation process rather than the mature ossified tissue. Clinical documentation requires careful distinction between HBF and normal callus formation during fracture healing.
