Malunion

A fracture that has healed in an anatomically incorrect position, potentially causing functional limitations or deformity.

Full Definition

Malunion occurs when a fractured bone heals in improper alignment, angulation, rotation, or length. This complication can result in functional deficits, pain, or cosmetic deformity that may require corrective intervention. In rehabilitation documentation, malunion significantly impacts treatment planning as exercises must accommodate the altered biomechanics and may focus on compensatory strategies rather than restoration of normal movement patterns.

Usage

Usage note: Distinct from delayed union (slow healing) and nonunion (failed healing); malunion represents completed but incorrect healing.

In Context

  • "The malunion of the radius resulted in limited forearm rotation requiring adaptive techniques training." — occupational therapy assessment
  • "Compensatory movement patterns developed secondary to malunion were addressed through targeted exercise interventions." — physical therapy treatment plan
