Partial Weight-Bearing
Medical restriction allowing limited weight placement on affected limb, typically specified as percentage or pounds.
Full Definition
A graduated weight-bearing restriction that permits placing a limited amount of weight on the affected extremity, usually specified as a percentage of body weight or specific weight in pounds. This intermediate restriction allows for some mechanical loading of healing tissues while providing protection from excessive stress that could compromise recovery. Common prescriptions include 25%, 50%, or 75% weight-bearing, though specific pound limits may also be prescribed. PWB status requires assistive devices and often benefits from use of specialized scales during gait training to help patients learn appropriate weight placement and develop proprioceptive awareness of the prescribed limits.
Usage
Usage note: Must specify the exact weight or percentage allowed. Commonly abbreviated as PWB.
