Scapular Dyskinesis

Pronunciation: dis-ki-NEE-sis

Abnormal or altered movement patterns of the scapula during arm motion.

Full Definition

Scapular dyskinesis, also known as SICK scapula syndrome, refers to dysfunction in the normal coordinated movement of the scapula during upper extremity activities. This condition involves altered scapular positioning, timing, or muscle activation patterns that can contribute to shoulder impingement, instability, and pain. The term has largely replaced 'scapular winging' as it encompasses a broader spectrum of scapular movement abnormalities beyond simple protraction.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred term over 'scapular winging' which describes only one type of dyskinetic movement.

In Context
