Isokinetic testing involves the use of specialized dynamometry equipment that controls the speed of movement while allowing variable resistance based on the force applied by the patient. This testing method provides objective measurements of muscle strength, power, and endurance at predetermined speeds, typically ranging from slow (60 degrees/second) to fast (300 degrees/second) angular velocities. Isokinetic testing is particularly valuable in sports medicine for assessing strength deficits between limbs, monitoring rehabilitation progress, and making return-to-play decisions. The testing can also identify muscle imbalances that may predispose athletes to injury.
