The group of three ligaments on the outer side of the ankle that provide stability against inversion injuries.

Full Definition

The lateral ankle ligament complex consists of three distinct ligaments: the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), and the posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL). This complex is the most commonly injured structure in ankle sprains, particularly in athletes. The ATFL is typically the first to be injured during inversion sprains, followed by the CFL in more severe injuries. The PTFL is rarely injured except in severe ankle dislocations. Understanding the anatomy and sequential injury pattern of this complex is crucial for proper diagnosis, treatment planning, and rehabilitation protocols in sports medicine.
