intramedullary rod

A metal implant inserted into the medullary canal of long bones for fracture fixation.

Full Definition

An intramedullary rod (also called intramedullary nail) is a long, cylindrical metal implant made of titanium or stainless steel that is inserted into the medullary cavity of long bones to provide internal fixation for fractures. These devices can be locked with cross-screws (interlocking nails) or unlocked, and may be reamed or unreamed depending on surgical technique. IM rods provide excellent biomechanical stability and allow for early mobilization while maintaining fracture alignment during healing.
