Lateral Collateral Ligament
A ligament on the outer side of the knee that provides stability against varus (inward) stress.
Full Definition
The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) is a cord-like structure located on the lateral aspect of the knee that extends from the lateral femoral epicondyle to the fibular head. Also known as the fibular collateral ligament, it serves as the primary restraint to varus stress and contributes to posterolateral rotatory stability of the knee. LCL injuries are less common than medial collateral ligament injuries and often occur in conjunction with other posterolateral corner structures. Isolated LCL tears may be treated conservatively, while complex posterolateral corner injuries typically require surgical reconstruction to restore knee stability and prevent chronic instability.
