The tibial tubercle is a prominent bony protuberance located on the anteroproximal aspect of the tibial shaft, approximately 2-5 cm below the joint line. It serves as the insertion site for the patellar tendon, completing the extensor mechanism of the knee. In orthopedic practice, the tibial tubercle is relevant in conditions such as Osgood-Schlatter disease in adolescents, patellar tendon ruptures, and as a landmark for various surgical procedures including tibial tubercle transfer for patellofemoral instability.

Usage note: Often interchangeable with 'tibial tuberosity' but 'tubercle' is more common in clinical usage.
