articular depression

A traumatic displacement of articular cartilage and underlying bone below the normal joint surface level.

Full Definition

An articular depression is a localized area where the joint surface has been driven downward below its normal anatomical level due to traumatic impact. This injury pattern commonly occurs in plateau fractures, particularly in the tibial plateau, where compressive forces cause the articular surface to collapse into the underlying metaphyseal bone. Articular depressions can significantly affect joint mechanics and long-term function if not properly addressed. Treatment typically requires elevation of the depressed segment, bone grafting to support the elevated articular surface, and stable internal fixation to maintain the restoration.
