Hardware failure refers to the mechanical breakdown or failure of internal fixation devices used in orthopedic surgery, including broken screws, bent or fractured plates, failed intramedullary nails, or loosened implants. This complication can occur due to various factors including metal fatigue, inadequate initial fixation, infection, osteoporosis, or excessive loading before adequate healing. Hardware failure may present as recurrent pain, loss of reduction, implant migration, or frank breakage visible on radiographs. Management depends on the timing of failure, degree of fracture healing, and patient symptoms, ranging from observation to revision surgery.
