An intramedullary nail (IM nail) is a metal rod inserted into the medullary canal of long bones to provide internal fixation for fractures. IM nails are typically secured with interlocking screws proximally and distally to prevent rotation and translation. They are particularly effective for diaphyseal fractures of the femur, tibia, and humerus. The minimally invasive insertion technique preserves soft tissue attachments and promotes faster healing compared to plate fixation in appropriate cases.
