Subtrochanteric fracture

A femoral fracture occurring in the region below the lesser trochanter, typically within 5cm of this landmark.

Full Definition

A subtrochanteric fracture is a type of proximal femur fracture that occurs in the subtrochanteric region, defined as the area of the femoral shaft extending from below the lesser trochanter to approximately 5cm distally. These fractures are challenging to treat due to the high mechanical stresses in this region, the strong muscle forces that create deforming forces, and the relatively poor blood supply. Subtrochanteric fractures often require intramedullary nailing or specialized implants and have higher complication rates compared to other hip fractures.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguished from intertrochanteric fractures by location relative to the lesser trochanter.
