varus angulation

Pronunciation: VAIR-us

Abnormal inward angulation of a bone or joint, creating a bow-legged appearance.

Full Definition

Varus angulation describes a deformity where the distal part of a bone or limb angles toward the midline of the body, creating an inward bend. In orthopedic trauma, varus deformities commonly occur as complications of malhealed fractures, particularly in the tibia, femur, and forearm bones. This angulation can result from inadequate reduction, loss of reduction during healing, or growth disturbances in pediatric patients. Assessment of varus alignment is critical in determining the need for corrective osteotomy or revision surgery.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly confused with 'valgus' - varus = inward, valgus = outward. Memory aid: 'varus' sounds like 'various' - various directions pointing inward.

In Context

  • "The radiographs demonstrated significant varus angulation at the fracture site." — Surgical report
  • "Corrective osteotomy was performed to address the 15-degree varus angulation." — Operative note
