Working length is a biomechanical principle in plate osteosynthesis referring to the distance between the screws closest to the fracture site on either side of the fracture. This parameter directly influences the stiffness and failure characteristics of the bone-implant construct. Longer working lengths create more flexible constructs that allow controlled motion at the fracture site, promoting callus formation, while shorter working lengths create stiffer constructs with less motion but higher stress concentration.
