Carbon fibre composite is increasingly used in orthotic devices—particularly dynamic AFOs, floor-reaction orthoses, and sports orthotics—because it offers a superior strength-to-weight ratio compared with polypropylene. The material's stiffness can be precisely engineered by varying the layup pattern and resin type, allowing clinicians to tune energy return and motion control characteristics. In editorial contexts, British English usage favours 'carbon fibre' (with the 're' ending), while American English uses 'carbon fiber'; editors must apply the appropriate spelling consistently throughout a document. The term should not be shortened to 'carbon' alone in clinical or regulatory documentation, as this lacks specificity.
