Functional Orthosis

An orthotic device designed to permit and optimise controlled movement during activity, as opposed to providing static immobilisation.

Full Definition

A functional orthosis is prescribed when the clinical goal is to guide, correct, or augment dynamic movement rather than to restrict it completely. Examples include functional knee orthoses used in ligamentous instability or dynamic wrist-hand orthoses used in neurological rehabilitation. Editors should be cautious of this term being used ambiguously: in some contexts, clinicians use 'functional' to mean 'activity-related' broadly, while in orthotic taxonomy it has a more precise meaning. The term should be distinguished from 'accommodative orthosis,' which prioritises pressure distribution and correction without necessarily guiding movement. 'Functional' should not be used as a vague modifier without clinical qualification.
