Hallux Valgus

Pronunciation: HAL-uks VAL-gus

A common forefoot deformity in which the great toe deviates laterally toward the lesser toes, often requiring specialist footwear or orthotic management.

Full Definition

Hallux valgus is the medically preferred term for a bunion deformity, characterised by lateral deviation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint and medial prominence of the first metatarsal head. It is one of the most frequent indications for custom footwear and toe-spacer orthotics referrals. Editors must not use 'bunion' and 'hallux valgus' interchangeably in formal clinical documents, as 'bunion' refers specifically to the bony prominence rather than the whole deformity complex. The term is always presented as two words in roman type.

Usage

Usage note: 'Bunion' is an acceptable lay synonym but should not replace 'hallux valgus' in formal clinical or research documents. Distinguished from hallux rigidus (stiff great toe) and hallux limitus (limited motion).

In Context

  • "The orthotic prescription noted hallux valgus with associated first metatarsophalangeal joint pain." — Orthotic referral form
  • "In clinical copy, 'bunion' may be used as a lay term but 'hallux valgus' should appear in formal documentation." — Editorial house style guide
