Orthotic Shell

The orthotic shell is the core load-bearing element of a custom foot orthosis, distinguishing the structural component from any top covers, padding, or supplementary additions. Shells may be fabricated from polypropylene, polyethylene, carbon fibre, or other composites via thermoforming or CAD/CAM milling. Shell thickness is a key variable in prescribing: a thicker shell provides greater rigidity and control, while a thinner shell offers more flexibility.
