Reciprocating Gait Orthosis

A bilateral HKAFO system that uses a cable or lever mechanism to link the hip joints, enabling alternating hip flexion-extension and thereby facilitating walking in paralysed patients.

Full Definition

The reciprocating gait orthosis (RGO) is a specialised bilateral lower-limb orthotic system incorporating a mechanical coupling—typically a Bowden cable or rigid linkage—between the hip joints so that extension of one hip drives flexion of the other. It is principally used in patients with thoracic-level spinal cord injuries or spina bifida. Editors should note that RGO is an abbreviation that must be defined on first use and written in all capitals without periods. It should not be conflated with a standard HKAFO, which lacks the reciprocating mechanism. Clinical reports may also reference the 'isocentric RGO' (IRGO) variant, which uses a rocker bar instead of cables.

Usage note: Define RGO in full on first use. Do not use 'reciprocating gait orthosis' and 'HKAFO' interchangeably—RGO is a specific subtype of HKAFO with a defined mechanical feature.
