Dynamic Orthosis

An orthotic device incorporating moveable components such as springs or hinges that allow or assist controlled joint movement, contrasting with static (rigid) orthoses.

Full Definition

A dynamic orthosis uses articulated joints, springs, elastic components, or other mechanisms to permit, guide, or facilitate movement while still providing support or correction. Examples include hinged AFOs that allow dorsiflexion during swing phase, and dynamic wrist–hand orthoses for tendon transfer rehabilitation. The term contrasts directly with 'static orthosis,' which immobilises the joint. Editors must hyphenate 'dynamic' only when it functions as part of a compound modifier (e.g., 'dynamic-assist orthosis'), and should avoid the informal synonym 'functional brace' in formal clinical documents.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish clearly from 'static orthosis' in all clinical and billing documents. Do not use 'functional brace' as a synonym in formal writing. Hyphenate only as a compound pre-modifier (e.g., 'dynamic-assist component').
