Plastazote

Pronunciation: PLAS-ta-zote

A brand name for a cross-linked polyethylene foam widely used in orthotics as a conformable, heat-mouldable, pressure-distributing lining or insole material.

Full Definition

Plastazote is a trademarked closed-cell polyethylene foam manufactured by Zotefoams plc that is valued in orthotics for its ability to be heat-moulded directly to the patient's foot, its low density, and its excellent pressure-distribution properties. It is available in varying densities (e.g., Plastazote 45, Plastazote 60) that determine its firmness and durability. In editorial documents, 'Plastazote' must always be capitalised as a proper noun; using it in lowercase is a style error. When used generically to refer to any cross-linked PE foam, editors should note this and offer the generic alternative 'cross-linked polyethylene foam.' It is frequently combined with denser foams such as PPT or Poron in multi-layer insole constructions.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalise 'Plastazote' as a brand name. If generic foam is intended, use 'cross-linked polyethylene foam.' Density grade (e.g., 45 kg/m³) should be stated in fabrication documents.

In Context

  • "The fabrication notes specified a Plastazote top cover over a firmer PPT base layer for the diabetic insole." — Orthotic fabrication worksheet
  • "The editor corrected 'plastazote' to 'Plastazote' four times throughout the manufacturing specification document." — Technical document editing
