Static Orthosis
An orthotic device with no moving parts that immobilises a body segment in a fixed position to promote healing, prevent deformity, or maintain alignment.

A static orthosis is designed to hold a joint or limb segment in one position, providing no intentional range of motion. Common examples include resting hand splints, foot drop splints worn at night, and rigid spinal braces. The device's rigidity prevents movement, which may be desirable in the acute phase of injury or post-surgery but may also risk muscle atrophy and joint contracture with prolonged use. In editorial contexts, 'static orthosis' is the antonym of 'dynamic orthosis' and must be distinguished from it precisely. Some authors use 'static' and 'rigid' synonymously in orthotic literature, but this is imprecise: a rigid device may still permit some motion, whereas a static device by definition does not.
