Unloading Orthosis

An unloading orthosis—most frequently encountered as an unloading knee orthosis—shifts weight-bearing forces from the affected compartment (medial or lateral) to the healthier side, reducing pain and slowing cartilage degradation in conditions such as unicompartmental osteoarthritis. Clinical documentation must specify which compartment is being unloaded and the degree of valgus or varus correction applied. Editors should be alert to the variant spelling 'offloading orthosis,' which is commonly used in diabetic foot care contexts and is not synonymous. In billing records, the device must be matched to the appropriate HCPCS code for knee orthoses.
