Malignant hyperthermia is a rare but potentially fatal genetic disorder of skeletal muscle that can be triggered by volatile anesthetic agents and succinylcholine. It is characterized by hypermetabolism, hyperthermia, muscle rigidity, and acidosis. Early recognition and treatment with dantrolene are crucial for patient survival. MH susceptibility is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, and family history screening is important in pediatric patients. All anesthesia locations must maintain MH crisis carts with appropriate medications and protocols.
