Microstream capnography is a specialized form of sidestream capnometry that samples exhaled gases at very low flow rates (50 mL/min or less), making it particularly suitable for monitoring ventilation in infants and small children. Unlike mainstream capnography, this technology minimizes dead space and provides accurate CO2 readings even in patients with tidal volumes as low as 3-5 mL. The low sampling rate prevents dilution of exhaled gases and maintains circuit integrity in pediatric anesthesia systems.
