Bidirectional Superior Cavopulmonary Connection

A surgical procedure connecting the superior vena cava directly to the pulmonary arteries as part of staged palliation.

Full Definition

The bidirectional superior cavopulmonary connection, also known as the bidirectional Glenn procedure, is the second stage of surgical palliation for single ventricle physiology. This procedure involves disconnecting the superior vena cava from the right atrium and connecting it directly to the pulmonary arteries, typically at 4-6 months of age. The procedure reduces volume load on the single ventricle while maintaining adequate pulmonary blood flow. It serves as an intermediate step before completion of the Fontan circulation.
