Branch Pulmonary Artery Stenosis

Narrowing of the right or left pulmonary arteries distal to the main pulmonary artery bifurcation.

Full Definition

Branch pulmonary artery stenosis refers to narrowing or obstruction of the right or left pulmonary arteries, or their subdivisions, beyond the main pulmonary artery bifurcation. This condition can be congenital or acquired, and may be focal or diffuse. It is commonly associated with complex congenital heart disease, particularly tetralogy of Fallot, pulmonary atresia, and single ventricle physiology. The stenosis can result in decreased pulmonary blood flow to the affected lung, pulmonary hypertension in the unaffected lung, and right heart strain. Treatment options include balloon dilation, stent placement, or surgical reconstruction.
