An intracardiac baffle is a surgically constructed partition made of synthetic material (such as Gore-Tex or Dacron) or biological tissue (like pericardium) that is placed within cardiac chambers to redirect blood flow. These structures are commonly used in complex congenital heart repairs, including atrial switch operations, Fontan completions, and repairs of double outlet ventricles. Baffles must be carefully designed to avoid obstruction while effectively channeling blood flow to the appropriate destinations. Long-term complications can include baffle obstruction, leaks, or thrombosis requiring surgical revision or transcatheter intervention.
