Mitral Valve Dysplasia
Abnormal development of the mitral valve apparatus resulting in structural malformation and functional impairment.
Full Definition
Mitral valve dysplasia encompasses a spectrum of congenital abnormalities affecting the mitral valve structure, including thickened, shortened, or dysplastic leaflets, abnormal chordae tendineae, and papillary muscle malformations. This condition can result in mitral stenosis, regurgitation, or both. It is commonly associated with other congenital heart defects, particularly left-sided obstructive lesions. Surgical repair or replacement may be required depending on the severity of dysfunction.
