fluid overload

Excessive accumulation of fluid resulting in positive fluid balance and potential organ dysfunction.

Full Definition

Fluid overload in pediatric critical care refers to the accumulation of excess fluid that can compromise cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal function. It is typically defined as a positive fluid balance of more than 10% of admission weight or 20 mL/kg cumulative positive balance. Fluid overload is associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation, increased length of stay, and higher mortality in critically ill children. Management involves careful fluid restriction, diuretic therapy, and in severe cases, continuous renal replacement therapy.

Usage

Usage note: Use as two words, not 'fluid-overload' unless used as a compound adjective.

In Context
