NIPPV

Also written as: NIPPV — nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation

Acronym for nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation. Non-invasive respiratory support method commonly used in neonatal and pediatric care.

Full Definition

Nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation is a form of non-invasive respiratory support that delivers intermittent positive pressure breaths through nasal prongs or a nasal mask. NIPPV provides both continuous positive airway pressure and additional pressure support breaths, making it more aggressive than simple CPAP. This modality is particularly useful in neonates and infants with respiratory distress who require more support than CPAP alone but wish to avoid endotracheal intubation. NIPPV can be synchronized with the patient's respiratory efforts or delivered in a non-synchronized manner. It has proven effective in preventing extubation failure and treating apnea of prematurity.

Usage

Usage note: May be synchronized (SNIPPV) or non-synchronized depending on the device capabilities.
