oxygenation index

A calculated parameter incorporating mean airway pressure to assess severity of lung injury.

Full Definition

The oxygenation index is calculated as (FiO2 × mean airway pressure × 100) / PaO2 and provides a more comprehensive assessment of lung injury severity than P/F ratio alone. In pediatric critical care, the oxygenation index is used in ARDS classification, ECMO candidacy decisions, and prognostic scoring. Values greater than 25 indicate severe lung injury, while values greater than 40 may prompt consideration for extracorporeal support in appropriate candidates.
