Full Definition
A clinical sign of respiratory distress characterized by the inward movement of the chest wall, particularly the intercostal spaces, supraclavicular areas, or subcostal regions, during inspiration. In pediatric patients, retractions are more readily visible due to increased chest wall compliance and indicate significant increased work of breathing. The presence and severity of retractions help assess the degree of respiratory compromise and guide treatment decisions.
