Full Definition

Synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV) is a hybrid ventilation mode commonly used in pediatric critical care that combines aspects of both controlled and spontaneous ventilation. The ventilator delivers a preset number of mandatory breaths per minute, synchronized with the patient's inspiratory efforts when possible, while permitting spontaneous breathing at the patient's own rate and tidal volume between mandatory breaths. This mode allows for gradual weaning from mechanical ventilation by progressively reducing the mandatory breath rate while maintaining ventilatory support. SIMV is particularly useful in pediatric patients as it promotes respiratory muscle conditioning while ensuring adequate ventilation.
