galactorrhea

Pronunciation: gal-ak-toh-REE-ah

Inappropriate milk production and secretion from the breasts in children or adolescents not related to pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Full Definition

Galactorrhea is the spontaneous flow of milk from the breast in children, adolescents, or adults who are not pregnant or breastfeeding. In pediatric endocrinology, galactorrhea most commonly results from elevated prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia) due to pituitary adenomas, medications, or hypothalamic disorders. The condition can occur in both males and females, though it is more common in females. Associated symptoms may include headaches, visual disturbances, or menstrual irregularities. Evaluation typically includes prolactin level measurement and, if elevated, pituitary imaging to rule out prolactinoma.
