A condition characterized by the early activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, resulting in the development of secondary sexual characteristics before the expected age range. In girls, this means onset before age 8 years, and in boys before age 9 years. The condition can be central (gonadotropin-dependent) involving early maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, or peripheral (gonadotropin-independent) caused by other sources of sex hormones. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent psychological distress, optimize final adult height, and address any underlying pathology.
