An acute medical emergency occurring in patients with severe forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, particularly the classic salt-wasting form. The condition results from aldosterone deficiency causing excessive sodium loss through the kidneys, leading to dehydration, hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, and cardiovascular collapse. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, poor feeding, and failure to thrive in infants. Without prompt recognition and treatment with intravenous fluids, sodium replacement, and stress-dose steroids, the condition can rapidly progress to shock and death.
