Ganglion cells are nerve cell bodies that form part of the enteric nervous system, located within the submucosal (Meissner's) and myenteric (Auerbach's) plexuses of the bowel wall. These cells are essential for normal intestinal motility and the coordination of peristalsis. The congenital absence of ganglion cells in a segment of bowel defines Hirschsprung disease, leading to functional obstruction and requiring surgical intervention. Histopathological identification of ganglion cells is the gold standard for diagnosing or excluding Hirschsprung disease. Editors should ensure consistent terminology when describing these cells in medical documentation.
