jejunostomy

Pronunciation: jeh-joo-NOS-toh-mee

Surgical creation of an opening between the jejunum and abdominal wall for feeding access in pediatric patients.

Full Definition

A jejunostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening (stoma) between the jejunum (middle portion of the small intestine) and the abdominal wall surface. In pediatric gastroenterology, this procedure provides direct access to the small intestine for nutrition delivery when oral or gastric feeding is not possible. The procedure may be temporary or permanent and is often performed in children with severe gastroesophageal reflux, gastroparesis, or anatomical abnormalities. A feeding tube (J-tube) is typically placed through the stoma.
