Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) involves the infusion of stem cells capable of reconstituting the entire hematopoietic and immune systems. In pediatric immunology, HSCT is the definitive treatment for severe primary immunodeficiencies such as SCID, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, and certain forms of combined immunodeficiency. The procedure can utilize stem cells from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood from related or unrelated donors. Success depends on factors including patient age, pre-existing infections, donor compatibility, and the specific underlying immunodeficiency disorder.
