Regulatory T-cell deficiency refers to quantitative or functional abnormalities in regulatory T-cells (Tregs), specialized immune cells responsible for maintaining self-tolerance and preventing excessive immune responses. In pediatric patients, Treg deficiency can result from genetic mutations affecting Treg development, survival, or function, leading to early-onset autoimmunity, severe allergies, and inflammatory bowel disease. The most severe form is seen in FOXP3 deficiency (IPEX syndrome), but milder deficiencies may present with isolated autoimmune phenomena. Diagnosis requires specialized flow cytometry analysis and functional assays of regulatory T-cell populations.
