epiglottitis
Pronunciation: eh-pig-lot-EYE-tis
Acute inflammation of the epiglottis potentially causing rapid airway obstruction, now rare due to Hib vaccination.
Full Definition
Epiglottitis is a life-threatening condition involving inflammation of the epiglottis that can rapidly progress to complete airway obstruction. Once commonly caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), it is now rare in vaccinated populations but can still occur from other bacterial pathogens. The classic presentation includes high fever, severe sore throat, drooling, and the tripod position. Immediate airway management is critical.
Usage
Usage note: Do not confuse with 'epiglottis' (the anatomical structure); the condition requires the '-itis' suffix.
