HSP

Also written as: HSP — Henoch-Schönlein purpura

Henoch-Schönlein purpura, an IgA-mediated small vessel vasculitis affecting children.

Full Definition

The most common form of childhood vasculitis, characterized by palpable purpura on the lower extremities and buttocks, often accompanied by arthritis, abdominal pain, and nephritis. HSP typically follows upper respiratory tract infections and represents an immune-complex mediated inflammatory response. The condition predominantly affects children aged 3-15 years with peak incidence in early school age. Medical editors must distinguish HSP from other causes of purpura and ensure consistent terminology, as the condition is now also referred to as IgA vasculitis in some classification systems.

Usage

Usage note: HSP is acceptable as standalone abbreviation in pediatric contexts; spell out on first use in general medical documents.

In Context

  • "The diagnosis of HSP was supported by the characteristic distribution of purpura and normal platelet count." — Pediatric emergency medicine note
