Peritoneal Dialysis-Associated Peritonitis

Also written as: PDAP — Peritoneal Dialysis-Associated Peritonitis

Infection of the peritoneal cavity in children receiving peritoneal dialysis, diagnosed by cloudy dialysate and abdominal pain.

Full Definition

Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis is a serious complication of chronic peritoneal dialysis in pediatric patients with end-stage renal disease. It presents with cloudy dialysate effluent, abdominal pain, and fever. Diagnosis requires dialysate cell count >100/μL with >50% neutrophils, positive dialysate culture, or clinical signs of peritonitis. Common causative organisms include Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus species. Treatment typically involves intraperitoneal antibiotics and may require catheter removal in severe cases.

Usage

Usage note: Hyphenate when used as a compound modifier; requires immediate antibiotic therapy.
