postinfectious glomerulonephritis

Kidney inflammation occurring after bacterial infection, typically group A Streptococcus, due to immune complex deposition.

Full Definition

An immune-mediated glomerular disease that develops 1-3 weeks following infection, most commonly with nephritogenic strains of group A Streptococcus affecting the throat or skin. The condition results from deposition of immune complexes in glomerular capillaries, leading to inflammation, hematuria, proteinuria, hypertension, and potential acute kidney injury. Postinfectious glomerulonephritis was historically called acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis but terminology has evolved to recognize other bacterial causes. The condition typically affects school-age children and has generally favorable prognosis with supportive care and treatment of underlying infection.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred term over 'acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis' to reflect multiple potential bacterial causes.
