Full Definition

Toxic shock-like syndrome (TSLS) is a rare but potentially fatal condition in children caused by bacterial superantigens, most commonly from Group A Streptococcus or Staphylococcus aureus. The syndrome is characterized by acute onset of high fever, diffuse erythematous rash, hypotension, and evidence of multiorgan dysfunction including renal, hepatic, or cardiac involvement. Unlike classic toxic shock syndrome, TSLS may occur without the typical desquamation pattern and can present in association with various bacterial infections including pneumonia, cellulitis, or necrotizing fasciitis. Early recognition and aggressive supportive care with antibiotics and intravenous immunoglobulin are crucial for survival.
