Bronchopulmonary sequence, also known as pulmonary sequestration, is a rare congenital lung malformation in which a portion of lung tissue develops without normal connection to the tracheobronchial tree and receives its blood supply from systemic rather than pulmonary vessels. The condition is classified as either intralobar (within the normal lung pleura) or extralobar (separate pleural covering). Intralobar sequestration is more common and typically presents later in life with recurrent infections, while extralobar sequestration may be detected prenatally or present in infancy with respiratory distress. The abnormal tissue does not contribute to gas exchange and may become infected. Treatment typically involves surgical resection of the sequestered lung tissue. Associated anomalies may include congenital diaphragmatic hernia or cardiac defects.
