Full Definition

Physiologic jaundice is a benign condition affecting approximately 60% of term newborns and 80% of preterm infants, typically appearing on day 2-3 of life. It results from the combination of increased bilirubin production from red blood cell breakdown and the newborn's immature hepatic conjugation system. Unlike pathologic jaundice, it follows a predictable pattern, peaks by day 3-5, and resolves spontaneously by 1-2 weeks in term infants. Clinical editors should distinguish this from concerning jaundice that appears within 24 hours of birth or persists beyond expected timeframes.
