spina bifida occulta

A mild form of spina bifida where the neural tube defect is covered by skin and typically causes no symptoms.

Full Definition

Spina bifida occulta is the mildest and most common form of spina bifida, a neural tube defect occurring during fetal development. In this condition, one or more vertebrae fail to close completely, but the spinal cord and nerves remain covered by skin and are usually unaffected. Most cases are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally on imaging. Unlike more severe forms of spina bifida, children with spina bifida occulta typically have normal neurological function and may only show subtle external signs such as a small dimple, tuft of hair, or birthmark over the affected area.

Usage

Usage note: Often discovered incidentally; distinguish from more severe open forms of spina bifida in medical documentation.
